An advanced form of inter-vehicle communication (IVC), called boomerang communication, which uses direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS), is presented. The proposed system is an asynchronous, independent communication method that utilizes sector antennas for the first time with DS/SS IVC. Previous papers have neglected to explain some of the problems with boomerang communication, such as prolonged packet collisions when omni-directional antennas are used. The proposed system overcomes these problems by the use of sector antennas. This is confirmed by computer simulation. With increased reliability shown by the proposed system, a decrease in vehicular accidents and more intelligent traffic flow can be expected.
