Onboard science processing opportunities can transform how spacecraft collect and use scientific data. The authors discuss three prototype software systems that tackle well-identified scientific calculations in a spaceborne setting. These include: QuakeFinder, an automated software package designed to search for subpixel surface motions on planetary surfaces; autonomous satellite detection, onboard software designed to automatically detect and flag natural satellites of small bodies such as asteroids; and 3D super-resolution, surface reconstruction software designed to improve image resolution, discover new classes of surface materials, and aid data compression.
