Project Pilgrim is the first experimental military asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network that has been successfully deployed on field exercises in Australia and one of only a few in the world. This network exposes broadband services, via satellite, to operational troops as well as acting as a test bed for further research into military ATM networks. The paper describes the Pilgrim network and its employment on Exercise Kangaroo 95, in particular those areas where measures were taken to emulate some services not yet available in ATM networks.
