After the first oil was discovered on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in 1971, the development of the offshore oil and gas production industry has moved forward at a tremendous pace. Now there are now some 37 offshore fields in production, with an average daily production of three million bbls of oil and 89 million m3 gas. This makes Norway the second largest oil producer in the world after Saudi Arabia and second only to Russia as the major supplier of gas to Continental Europe. With the decline in oil prices there has been constant pressure to reduce construction and operating costs. This is where the control and instrumentation discipline has been in the forefront. The paper concentrates on control and safety systems.
