The performance of non return to zero intensity and polarisation modulation optical systems in zero average chromatic dispersion links is evaluated. The effect of the spectral broadening induced by the interplay between Kerr effect and ASE is studied and a simple expression has been found to evaluate the signal bandwidth at the link output in the case of a sawtooth distribution of the chromatic dispersion. The role of the preamplifier optical filter and the methods to reduce the light depolarisation induced by the interplay among the Kerr effect, ASE and polarization mode dispersion are analysed. As a result we show that transmissions on transoceanic distances are possible also by using polarisation modulation.
