Virtual environment (VE) technology is still in its infancy. However, there is great potential for this technology for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Several NASA centers, following initial research and development at the Ames Research Center (ARC), Moffett Field, California, in the Aerospace Human Factors Division, are now investigating and developing VE technology for specific NASA tasks and missions. Research support for VE technology development has been part of NASA's human factors research program since 1985. Under the auspices of the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (CAST), initial funding was provided to ARC, which resulted in the origination of VE. Since 1985, other NASA Centers have begun using and developing VE. At each research and space flight center, NASA missions have been major drivers of the technology. This two part article provides an overview of major VE technologies at four NASA sites: Ames, Goddard, Johnson, and Marshall. This part reviews Ames Research Center (ARC) and Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).
