An HF ocean radar is a very useful instrument for coastal ocean research, since it can measure ocean surface currents and sea wave parameters (height, direction, etc.) over a wide area in a short time. The ocean radar is a land based system, so it is suitable for monitoring sea states over a long period. The Okinawa Radio Observatory of Communications Research Laboratory developed the first Japanese HF ocean radar system in 1988. Experiments using this radar have been made in several places in Japan for three years. The present paper introduces the ocean radar system and shows results of the Kuroshio current measurements in the Tokara Strait in 1990.
