A large component in the operational cost of a weapon is training of the operators and the maintainers. The complexity and cost of the systems themselves inhibit their use as a training device. They are not designed for continually being taken apart, adjusted, and assembled so that maintenance technicians may gain hands-on practice. Therefore, some sort of training device is needed which is effective for operator and maintenance training and is low in cost. The discussion centers upon the maintenance aspect of training, specifically maintenance trainers.
