The design and capabilities of future anti-ship missile (ASM) systems are driven by a number of key considerations such as stand-off deployment, target selection, defence penetration, and lethality. In order to meet the required performance capabilities in each of these areas, the future ASM will incorporate sophisticated, autonomous, computer processing for both missile guidance and sensor acquisition/tracking of the target (this autonomous processing may be complemented by the provision of updates by a stand-off platform, but at the potential risk of the stand-off platform itself being engaged by the target's defences).
