Numerically simulated wave data are used to estimate the performance characteristics of conventional, upward-looking acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) for measuring wave direction. Results from a field deployment in shallow water are presented. Measurement principles are discussed. The overall conclusion is that bottom-mounted ADCPs in depths of up to 100 m are likely to be capable of resolving direction for the energy-containing waves.
