Profiles of old and new waterways linking the Charleroi-Brussels and Mons-Conde canals are superimposed to show how a single 73 m lift and two locks supersede the four lifts and six locks of the former route. Comparative estimates of investment and operating costs, installed electric power and kilowatthours consumed per journey are tabulated for the new lift and its considered alternatives (two 36.5 m lifts, three locks, 1 in 10 and 1 in 20 inclined planes, and a 1 in 30 flume). Extensive dimensions and weights of the lift and its equipment are given with structural details of the channel bridges, mobile tanks, suspension and control mechanisms, wedges and gates. Longitudinal and transverse guidance of the tanks is explained by line drawings. The authors give detailed descriptions of the electrical equipment, its regulation and interactive operation with graphics software from a command station, a monitoring station or several local controls linked by decentralised control units.
