Describes the application of fiber optic sensors and datalinks for onboard communication and control in next-generation transport aircraft and jet fighters. Traditional wire systems need to be protected from electromagnetic interference by metal shielding, diodes and connectors. Taking advantage of the low weight by electromagnetic interference immunity of optical fibers a significant amount of weight could be saved. Fiber optics also overcomes the problems of signal transmission through electrical cables and poor contacts at connectors. Types of sensors, coherent communications, designing the fiber into the aircraft and working environment considerations are discussed.
