For more than 20 years, the US Navy has been developing electronic antisurface ship missile defense (ASMD) systems. Most of the US Navy's electronic ASMD systems consist of an electronic intelligence (Elint) suite linked to chaff launchers and/or deception jammers. These systems are continuously being upgraded to meet new missile threats. The Navy's main ASMD electronic systems include the AN/SLQ-17, which is installed on aircraft carriers, but is eventually being phased out, and four versions of the AN/SLQ-32, now carried on warships of many classes.
