The newest bubble memory technology emerging from the laboratory promises to offer the advantages of traditional bubble memory storage, as well as dramatic increases in capacities and speed. These increases will enable bubble memory to compete with virtually any other memory technology, including rotating disks, tape and solid-state memories. Bubble memory began its comeback via the introduction of off-the-shelf subsystem level products. Packaged as direct replacements for floppy disk and magnetic tape drives, these subsystems typically consist of a drive with removable plug-in bubble memory cartridges. The drives are equipped with an industry or military standard computer interface (small computer standard interface, RS-232 serial data. Navy tactical data system and 1553B data bus) and supporting software drivers to allow easy integration into the target system. Cartridges currently are available in storage capacities that range from 360000 bytes to 2 megabytes. Bubble memory storage subsystems are enhancing the capabilities of newly fielded military electronic systems, particularly field communications and data storage systems.
