In the area of microcircuit technology, key functions include electronic warfare, communications, fusion, intelligence/reconnaissance, surveillance and weapons guidance. But four critical microcircuit elements are common to supporting these systems: amplifiers, analog/digital converters, signal processors and data processors. The applications of these common elements suggest that solutions for a number of systems requirements may be met by exploiting common technologies emphasizing system commonalities to control costs in materials, fabrication and maintenance. To meet the challenges ahead, the Air Force plans to: continue increasing microcircuit capabilities; improve methods for decreasing cost while improving reliability/repeatability performance; and develop design capabilities for integrating radio frequency, optical and digital circuits.
