Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge Steel subsidiary and USX Corp. teamed up to produce high quality, corrosion-resistance steel for automobiles. The result was a$200 million automated electrolytic galvanizing plant operated by Double Eagle Steel Coating Co. at Dearborn, MI. The CIM goals were: to use state-of-the-art, proven control technology, to maximize electronic information transfer, to minimize the use of direct and indirect labor, and to collect extensive data automatically for use in statistical process control, process analysis, and production reporting. The article overviews the features of this CIM operation, concentrating on the distributed process control system that controls and/or integrates several levels within the plant's computer-based hierarchy.
