The development of data transmission techniques within avionics systems has been driven by the requirements for speed of operation, reliability, maintainability and flexibility, plus the need for minimum weight and size compatible with these requirements. The data transmission method that has emerged as the standard for avionics systems over the 1980s is MIL-STD-1553B, a command/response multiplexed databus. The author discusses the advantages and drawbacks of the MIL-STD-1553B standard and considers the development of two databus systems-the EFAbus implementation of STANAG 3910 and the American High Speed Data Bus. It is concluded that as these high speed bus architectures evolve in parallel with the developments in distributed processing, avionics systems are moving away from dependence on the physical configuration of the aircraft fit, towards truly flexible and adaptable implementations.
