In 1985, Brush introduced the present 68000 microcomputer system. Originally, it consisted of a CPU card, an analogue and a digital card. As the applications grew a number of other peripheral cards were added, some with microprocessors of their own. The author describes the use of this system for rail traffic control, the applications of which now include almost all types of traction equipment including chopper, phase angle control and inverters mounted on locomotives, EMUs and light rail vehicles running off AC, DC, and diesel power sources.
