A diesel-electric propulsion control system for an icebreaker ship using synchronous motors and synchronous generators is described. This propulsion system realizes the power plant concept, which optimizes the number of generators which are online in order to match the generated electrical power to the total electrical demand of the ship. The propulsion control system has two control loops which limit the power required by the propulsion motor so as to prevent the diesel engine, which drives the generator, from stalling during instantaneous or sustained overloads. The power system, and sea trial tests are described.
