A fractionally tapped equalization structure is described for a satellite communication system where the equalization is performed at passband and the tap weight corrections are derived at baseband and stored digitally. This structure is ideal for a 120 Mb/s TDMA environment, in contrast with a purely baseband equalizer, since successive bursts can be handled adequately, separate equalization of each transmitter-receiver link is not necessary, and independent control of amplitude and phase exists, due to the fractional nature of the equalizer. Computer simulation of the structure indicates good performance with respect to bit error rate for certain classes of performance. Implementation can be accomplished with currently available technology.
