The increasing application of microelectronic systems aboard ships has forced operators to address a number of fundamental questions relating to the maintenance of such systems. Will the onboard electronic equipment fail? Can the failed equipment be repaired on board? If so, are the required spares carried? Can preventive maintenance minimise the failure? (In many cases it has reduced reliability.) What will be the consequences of the failure? Can the ship reach port? Who will carry out the maintenance or fault finding? What training and tools does he require? The author considers these questions and looks at the current trends in maritime equipment design. For the highly rationalised ships of the future, he points out essentially three ways in which microelectronic systems can be designed with regard to availability and maintenance: fault tolerant systems; maintenance-free systems; and maintenance-ease systems. Each of these design options is examined.
