The author argues, on the basis of data from a survey of government and industry experts, that there is a lack of an effective means to incorporate software support factors into the logistics support analysis (LSA) process, and that this can result in a suboptimal system design and increased support costs. He highlights the deficiencies in the currently applied LSA process and proposes a course of corrective action. He suggests that the constructive cost model of B. Boehm (Software Engineering Economics, Prentice-Hall, 1981), combined with other parameters, could be used as the basis for developing a set of software LSA record data elements.
