The authors identify INFOSEC (information security) challenges specific to advanced avionics in military systems and present a methodology for addressing these challenges. This methodology is based on a system engineering approach to integration of security with the advanced avionics. The authors also discuss the trusted computing base (TCB) as an emerging INFOSEC technology for providing security services in an A3 (advanced avionics architecture). The application of existing COMPUSEC (computer security) guidelines, specifically the National Computer Security Center (NCSC) Rainbow Series, is discussed in the context of an advanced avionics environment.
