The United States Army is responsible for installing, operating and maintaining the Theater Communications System (Army) to support the theater Army commander and assigned forces in all theaters. The size, complexity and capabilities of these systems have evolved and grown steadily over the past 30 years. The system has progressed from frequency division multiplexed transmission systems and manual switchboards, through time division multiplexed systems and automatic analog switches, to the current digital group multiplexed systems and automatic digital switches. Although many Reserve component units still are equipped with the earlier generation systems and manual switchboards, new systems that provide higher quality signal support currently are being fielded to a large part of the Army. The success of this evolutionary process is attributable largely to work in the TRI-TAC Program.
