The configuration of a chassis dynamometer for 4WD vehicles is changing in many ways according to the variety of car models. New techniques and constituent elements have been called for in conjunction with such various requirements as the reduction of overall facility size and the multiplicity of test purposes and methods. Such a trend has stimulated the advent of new products and new techniques. Most of these are also applicable to chassis dynamometers for two-wheel-drive vehicles. The authors discuss: a new series of high-performance DC dynamometers for chassis dynamometers; a roller dynamometer, where a roller is combined with a FREC dynamometer; applied products arising from compact arrangements by combining the roller and flywheel into a common body; and techniques for high-accuracy front/rear axle synchronizing control.
