Innovations such as the National Semiconductor/International Rectifier 8200 intelligent power circuit call for a systems approach allowing for several other associated technologies, to secure the capability of interaction over computer networks with overall optimisation. The advantages and drawbacks of conventional sensors, conditioned, digital-output, serial and system sensors are compared. A review of high-density packages, silicon sensors (including microchips), mixed technologies, and application-specific integrated circuitry is followed by discussion of intelligent actuators and power circuits, multiplexed wiring, and system optimisation. The subject is treated from the viewpoint of automotive electronics.
