A new flexible automotive assembly system (FAS) has been developed that improves product quality and reduces direct labor cots. The system, which produces a family of four different steering shaft/housing subassemblies for 1989 car models, has 19 stations and a 7.2 s cycle time and can produce up to 500 pieces/hr. It can build a variety of lot sizes, or as little as a single unit. The system, which was designed and built by Hansford Manufacturing, features three levels of computer control and monitoring, including monitoring and collection of quality information that is sent back to a statistical process control (SPC) computer.
