3M have developed the interactive highway management workstation which consists of a modified SUN 160 workstation, two video disc players, a high resolution colour video monitor and mouse. The software is written in INGRES and 'C' and includes a specially developed screen driver to allow video input to be mixed and displayed with text and graphics generated by the SUNOS operating system. The workstation allows the highway engineer to view map photographs at each of the various scales. The maps can be traversed until the area of the network of interest is displayed. Zooming in and out can be achieved by selecting different photographs using mouse and cursor.
