Requirements for the instrumentation to measure railway track geometry are given, and alternative implementations are considered. A compensated accelerometer arrangement that replaced an earlier vertical-reference gyroscope used to establish a horizontal reference is described. Theoretical performance estimates for the new implementation are presented.
