LAMPS is a major weapon system developed for the US Navy involving extensive software development for embedded processors. The development approach, a precursor to the requirements of US Dept. of Defense standards DOD-STD-1679 and DOD-STD-2167, produced highly successful results. Maintenance costs have been low because the software delivered to the operational environment has been relatively defect-free, and the problems of incorporating new and modified functions have been minimal. Maintainable software was achieved primarily through disciplined planning and design. Emphasis was placed on early identification of problems so they could be addressed before they grew to unmanageable proportions. The development methods, processes, and tools were subsequently incorporated into DOD-STD-1679.
