A radar warning receiver (RWR) is designed to warn occupants of an aircraft, ship or land vehicle that they are being attacked by radar controlled weapons and to give them and their defensive subsystems enough information about the impending attack to allow effective defensive measures to be initiated. RWRs increasingly are being used on watercraft and land vehicles, but their airborne uses constitute most current applications and budget considerations. Although some aspects of the future of radar warning receivers remain somewhat unclear, a consensus points to the following conclusions. The days of radar warning receivers appear numbered, although that number may be large (perhaps about 7000 days). The future will involve fully integrated systems in which offensive and defensive functions blur, and virtually everything is done using the same apertures and computers. Until all current generation airplanes are retired, a probable series of RWR update programs will increase performance levels and address new threats with minimum impact on aircraft A-kits. Companies now involved in producing RWRs will have to compete with other avionics manufacturers for participation in integrated avionics programs.
