The past background and present status of power-train sensors and actuators are reviewed, and future projections are given. Particular attention is given to the capabilities of the SCAP (silicon capacitance absolute pressure) sensor. Power-train sensors and actuators for the year 2000 and beyond are considered with respect to quality, size, and functions. It is concluded that the most important step over the next several decades is to develop improved, cost-effective sensors and actuators to meet expected customer demand for quality and reliability.
