The author reviews the present state of the development and introduction of electronically controlled systems in commercial vehicles, based on publications and discussions with vehicle manufacturers. He notes that good agreement exists on the structuring of electronically controlled subsystems and on the objectives to be achieved with electronics. Only limited information is available on the strategies planned for introduction of electronics and approaches towards optimization of the total vehicle. He points out the need for an early consensus on standards for a communication link between subsystems and for the future vehicle voltage supply system. It is concluded that engine management will be the first electronically controlled subsystem used on a broader scale to meet emission standards.
