The Harpoon anti-ship weapon system, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, is a subsonic cruise missile that can be fired from surface ships, submarines, aircraft and land-based missile launchers at stand-off distances said to exceed 67 miles. Probably Harpoon's most significant feature is a sophisticated guidance section that effectively engages land, surface and subsurface targets. It consists of a plastic-coated radome and a solid-state, frequency-agile, active radar that enables autonomous terminal maneuvering after launch. The missile features an all-weather ability using ECCM techniques that can be employed in EW environments. It uses a three-axis, strap-down, Lear Siegler attitude reference assembly with an IBM digital computer and short-pulse Honeywell (or Kollsman) AN/APN-194 radar altimeter for midcourse guidance. As a result, missiles can be guided to the vicinity of targets where homing radar then takes over.
