ERS-1 the first microwave remote sensing satellite to be launched by the European Space Agency, is likely to be the forerunner of a series of European remote sensing satellites to become operational in the 1990s. ERS-1 forms a major element of the European Earth Observation program, covering meteorology, climatology, oceanography, land resources inventory and monitoring, geodesy and geodynamics. The satellite will provide the ESA member states Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom (Canada is an associate member), under the prime contractorship of Dornier systems, radar and infrared measurements of selected surface parameters from space. Then it will extract from these measurements environmental and geophysical data to disseminate to user communities. The mission objective is to increase the scientific understanding of coastal zones and global ocean processes, which, together with the monitoring of polar ice regions, will provide a major contribution to the world climate research program.
