With several successful space projects under its belt, Europe now is moving full-steam toward autonomy in space. Three projects are anchoring this effort. One is the Ariane 5 heavy launch vehicle, which is scheduled to fly in 1995. The second project is the Columbus space station, with two elements, an attached pressurized module and man-tended free-flyer. The third anchor to the European space effort is the European space plane, Hermes. Its first launch will be in the 1998 time frame.
