The US Navy has selected a commercial off-the-shelf personal computer to be used as a word processing system, with the provision that it meet the emission requirements of MIL-STD-461B. Since the system is commercially available, it did comply with FCC Part, 15, Sub-Part J, Class B requirements. The system, as received, was tested to obtain MIL-STD-461B baseline data and to determine areas of excess electromagnetic emission. After a review of baseline data, a modification program was instituted to rework the system, enabling it to meet the electromagnetic-interference (EMI) requirements. Due to contractual constraints, modifications were limited to mechanical changes only.
