Each ship in a group is described by nonlinear differential equations. Therefore, simple automatic rudders with linear control laws are not always effective and may represent a collision hazard during maneuvers. In such situations, the captain must switch off the autorudder and transfer to manual control, which leads to considerable stress and may give rise to serious errors. As automatic and manual modes both have disadvantages, it is desirable to have a two-level system, in which the lower level is implemented by the hardware and provides stability within set limits for the behavior of the ship as a controlled object, i.e. it provides the closed-loop system with homeostasis. The upper level includes the operator and serves to modify the transient response on the basis of the situation, which means that the operator's activities are subject to much less stringent requirements. The upper level selects the particular path out of the set of permissible ones that can be realized by the lower level. Such a system is presented. A nonlinear feedback law is synthesized to stabilize the programmed motion.
