Cockpit design is more than choosing a pleasing variety of colors for display graphics-it is a matter of maximizing display formats, knowing what material to display and determining how and where to display it. Information for these displays comes from navigation instruments, forward-looking-infrared sensors, radar, radio and satellite transmissions or video cameras. For example, the US Navy's F/A-18 Hornet uses a heads-up display (HUD) to present all flight and combat information. Pilots can watch their targets during combat while the radar switches to vertical search, locks on and tracks the target, then flashes a shoot cue on the display when the hit probability is within range. Many of the improvements in cockpit instrumentation have been possible because of prototype work involving graphics simulation.
