Discusses the early expectations of artificial intelligence (AI), expert systems, brainlike systems, human-machine symbiosis, and the future direction of AI. AI is now defined as the development of a systematic theory of intellectual processes, wherever they occur. This bodes well for C2, where innovative thinking is the crucial weapon. Digital computers programmed as expert systems have not helped so far, and they apparently have little potential beyond rate solutions of straight-forward problems. Brainlike machines might help because they would use association to solve problems that overload the situation assessment and planning process.
