Discusses the use of the CRT as a head down display (HDD) replacing traditional mechanical instruments, head up display (HUD), where it is projected on to the windscreen in front of the pilot, helmet mounted displays (HMD) where it is projected on to an eyepiece built in to the pilot's helmet, and remote map readers (RMR). The present monochrome CRTs for HDD are packages comprising CRT and deflection coil in a magnetic shield and flying leads. They have narrow-band pass filters to match narrow-band emission phosphors bonded on to the tube faceplate to provide increased contrast under the high ambient light in which they operate. Recently the military has requested total shielding against electric fields including all the leads and the complete useful screen area.
