Intermediate Forward Test Equipment (IFTE) is the US Army's new ATE (automatic test equipment) system, which encompasses a wide range of testing capabilities as well as levels of testing. It will replace many of the systems presently used by the Army and consolidate the Army's ATE family. The design of IFTE will provide testing capabilities for future as well as present-day units under test (UUTs). The authors examine the ATE advances incorporated into IFTE to enhance testing capabilities and test program set (TPS) development. They discuss the technological improvements as well as those designed to improve its relationship with the user. Systems which may eventually be replaced by IFTE, such as ADADS and M105, are considered, as well as the techniques used by IFTE to capture TPSs already written and used by those systems to be replaced. Some of the technological advances that are covered include the gold-dot system interface, virtual instrument chassis (VIC) resources, commercial instruments used, improvements in user interface, optical disk technology, and voice synthesization.
