Tactical communications for the next war are in being now. Battle front communications will be enhanced by a high capacity, multiaccess, information distribution system with integrated communication, navigation and identification (CNI) attributes. A triservice (Army, Navy, Air Force) effort, called the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS), provides jam resistance and secure CNI for use in combat. To enhance military operations, JTIDS features include pseudonoise, nodeless information distribution, high data rate, frequency hopping and crypto-secure communication. Pseudonoise forces broadcasts appear as noise on hostile detection devices. Nodeless communications are possible, platform to platform, without relay stations (referred to as nodes). The system approaches real time through the use of minuscule time slots in a high data rate. Frequency hopping consists of rapid frequency changes during transmissions between 960 and 1215 MHz. Crypto-secure communication designates encoding and decoding of messages, which prevent signal exploitation. Additionally, JTIDS incorporates an error code, which reconstructs a message if part of it is lost during delivery.
