The 29th Division, 1/170 Army National Guard, has organized the communications (commo) platoon into a team structure. Three teams provide radio, wire/telephone and maintenance support. The commo teams are split up, with the radio team at the transmitter (TX) site and the wire and maintenance teams within the tactical operations center (TOC) area. The commo teams use a variety of equipment to provide the necessary support. The AN/PRC-77 and AN/GRC series frequency modulation (FM) radios are the primary means of communication. An AN/GRN-39 radio wire integration (RWI) unit is used to remote the FM transmitter from the TOC. This ensures that no FM signature can be detected at the command element location. Currently, no secure transmission capabilities exist in this unit, but future plans provide for secure FM transmission capabilities. Telephone connectivity to the subordinate companies can be provided through the SB-22 tactical switchboard and wire network.
