In this paper, the design of a direct-drive, axial-field, permanent-magnet brushless d.c. motor for powering an electric bicycle is described. Techniques employed for fabrication of various parts of the motor are discussed. Two-dimensional finite element method is used for computing the magnetic field distribution, from which the motor performance can be determined. A prototype motor has been built, together with the electronic converter drive. Preliminary tests on the prototype motor demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design for electric bicycle applications. Work is in progress to improve the reliability and performance of the motor.
