Magnetorheological (MR) fluids can be used to construct electrically controllable dampers for the chassis of automobiles. A compact construction, however, can only be achieved if the MR fluid valves including coil and magnetic circuit are integrated into the piston of the damper. At high piston speeds, the damping forces are influenced - due to the short length of the valves - by the short time spent by the MR fluid particles within the magnetic field of the MR fluid valves. The characteristics of the two valves were examined in the flow mode at high volume flows and short valve lengths. The basic viscosity of the MR fluid considerably infulences the achievable pressure differences. A MR fluid absorber was constructed and the influence of the reaction time of the MR fluid on its behaviour was tested. Finally, it will be shown that a reduction of the number of ampere turns of the coil can be achieved by integrating permanent magnets into the magnetic circuit.
