In order to increase the efficiency and safety of the traffic, new concepts and technologies for a future Integrated Road Transport Environment (IRTE) are currently developed and implemented in various national and international research and development programms. Both wide-range as well as short-range vehicle-roadside communications are investigated with regard to their capability to support various RTTT services. In order to determine the optimal system parameters reliable performance evaluation methods are needed by system designers. Typical performance parameters are the transaction failure rate, of the offered service, the interference between different services, the optimal control parameters for the communication protocols, the usage ratio of the communication zone and the influence of physical links characteristics. With SIMCO3(2 plus)/DSRC (dedicated short-range communications) a powerful simulation tool for the performance evaluation of DSRC systems is available, which allows an integrated analysis of mobility, channel behaviour and DSRC communication architecture. They showed that that on a three-lane motorway SDMA and diversity RTDMA configuration are able to provide the required system performance. In addition, first results concerning the feasibility of direction finding algorithms for RTTT applications based on DSRC were presented. In future, a complete validation of interoperable EFC systems based on the DSRC standards will be carried out in a further European research project.
