AC induction motors replace DC-commutator machines in modern traction equipment. The VVVF-inverter technology with IGBT-voltage source inverters controlled by PWM improved the former used current source thyristor inverters with input chopper. IGBTs bring in advantages for the traction equipment even in power ranges for metro cars. Highly integrated TCUs based on 32-bit microprocessors guarantee excellent dynamic performance of the trains, accurate slip slide control and comfortable diagnosis in case of failure. Modern SIEMENS traction equipment for metro cars are characterized by: Substantial weight reduction of the traction motor (about 25 % compared to DC-motors of the same range) mounted in reliable transversal drive units with simple spur gearings; Fully generative braking into the receptive mains nearly up to the trainstop; Reduced noise and low motor losses due to small harmonic distortion in the motor currents (less than 20 % over the duty cycle); High efficieny (approx. 98 %), highly reliable, snubberless 2-level-VVVF-IGBT-inverters with approx. 2 kHz pulse frequency, for maximum power ratings of 1.5 MW per motorcar, with independent torque control of each bogie, mounted in modular designed underfloor traction containers, including line filtering and TCU and according to standards like IEC1287-1 and EN50207; Maintenance free air cooling for the traction container and self ventilated air cooled AC induction motors according to IEC349-2; Safe protection of power electronic and main components by monitoring critical values for overtemperatures, overcurrents and overvoltages in the traction container, using on-line thermal models; Direct communication to the microprocessor train control unit via data bus system; Highly efficient slip and slide control for optimal exploitation of the adhesion factor and low maintenance of the driving unit. These main highlights rely on a long experience of Siemens in electrical and mechanical design of IGBT-traction equipment for mass transit rolling stock, proven in many rail applications, e.g. Frankfurt, Würzburg, Portland, Heathrow, Prague and Berlin.
