This paper reports some general comments on harmonics and electromagnetic interference issues in electric rail transport systems in the light of the recent technological development of electronic power converters for propulsion. Then, some remarks on main interference sources and on standards related to electromagnetic interference in railways are given. Some requirements for the theoretical approach and for modelling and simulation are reported. Electrical system compatibility will be a big challenge in the next decades. There is a strong need for a novel approach to the related problems, in order to minimise costs related to electromagnetic issues, which are probably going to increase, because of the introduction of new technologies (e.g. IGBTs). Manufacturers, operators and researchers will have to cooperate in order to guarantee the establishment of the required new culture. This should be done also by accessing to European Commission funding. In this context, collaboration between railway manufacturers and operators (together with researchers) must be encouraged, in order to achieve the common necessary approach to the problem, taking account of the respective needs.
