In Britain the Home Office issued a paper in 1996 requiring that a glazing system had to provide a resistance of up to 2 minutes against entry into the vehicle interior, a condition which present glazing does not adhere to. In 1995 the British Standard BS AU 209 Part 4 was introduced, which required a vehicle security glazing system to withstand a 5 impact test representing 5 blows with a hammer. Although an adequate test method for security glass it does not represent a valid test method for achieving two minutes of integrity against a determined assailant, as detailed by the Home Office paper. The general trend for vehicle security glazing is a move towards laminated glass products, where the resistance to entry is increased dramatically over that provided by the traditional toughened glass. Other materials such as PC have been incorporated for increased levels of security and different materials are now also being examined which when incorporated into a laminate rnatrix will enhance the resistance to penetration even further than that offered by standard laminated glass.
